Why a universal number is misleading
A guest-room mattress used ten nights a year is not equivalent to a primary bed used by two adults and a large dog. An uneven base can accelerate distortion, while a stable foundation and appropriate care can avoid premature problems.
Use broad ranges only to schedule closer inspection. The symptom-led article When Should I Replace My Mattress? tells you what to do when the bed already feels different.
Construction-specific wear patterns
These are inspection points, not promises that one category will last a specific number of years. Compare construction using Understanding the Different Types of Mattresses.
| Construction | Common area to monitor | Context that changes timing |
|---|---|---|
| All-foam | Body zones, edges and support-core consistency | Foam type, depth and load |
| Spring | Upholstery, coil noise and edge stability | Coil design and foundation |
| Hybrid | Comfort-layer settling plus coil response | Layer thickness and weight |
| Latex | Localized softening, cover and overall support | Latex construction and strong base |
Use changes the clock
Two sleepers
More total loading and often concentrated centre wear.
Edge sitting
Repeated narrow loading can change the perimeter.
Children and pets
Additional movement, moisture and shared space.
Seasonal home
Long periods unused; humidity control still matters.
Adjustable base
Mattress must be designed for repeated flexing.
Foundation condition can dominate
Wide slat gaps, a missing centre leg or a bowed box spring can create an impression before the mattress materials have reached the end of their normal life. Check the base at installation and during seasonal maintenance.
The box-spring guide and sagging diagnostic provide the compatibility and measurement steps.

Inspection schedule as the mattress ages
Every season
Check frame stability, moisture and obvious surface change.
After a move
Inspect handling damage and verify the new base.
When comfort changes
Remove topper, inspect pillow and measure the mattress and base.
When several signs persist
Document current likes and dislikes and begin a deliberate replacement search.
The timing rule that holds up
Keep a mattress while it remains clean, structurally sound, consistently supportive and suitable for the sleepers. Replace it when evidence shows those conditions no longer hold and the surrounding setup has been ruled out. That rule is less memorable than ‘every X years,’ but much more accurate.
Common questions
Do mattresses expire?
They do not have a universal expiry date. Their useful life depends on construction, use, care, foundation and changing sleeper needs.
Should a guest-room mattress be replaced on the same schedule?
Not necessarily. Lower use may reduce wear, but age, humidity, cleanliness and support should still be inspected.
