Mattress donation & recycling in Canada
A new bed is on its way.
Where should the old one go?
Find a place to donate a mattress that still has life in it, a recycler for one that does not, or the right local disposal service.
Find options near you
Start with its condition
Donate, recycle or dispose?
In Canada, mattress donation and recycling depend on where you live and the condition of the mattress. A charity’s approval comes first. If reuse is not suitable, look for a service that specifically recycles mattresses. Otherwise, use your municipality’s approved bulky-waste route.
Offer it for donation
Clean, dry, comfortable and undamaged? Send the size, age and photos to a charity that lists mattresses. Wait for acceptance before arranging transport.
Find a mattress recycler
Recyclers can recover materials such as steel, foam and wood. Ask whether your mattress type and condition qualify, and whether pickup is available.
Arrange proper disposal
Use the municipal service or approved receiving facility for your address. Follow booking, wrapping and set-out instructions so the item can be collected.
Keep it indoors until the arrangements are made. Rain, dirt and an unplanned night at the curb can make a usable mattress unsuitable for donation. Tell the receiving service about any stains, odours, mould or pests before moving it.

Find your local route
Browse municipal services, donation programs and mattress recyclers. Each listing links to the organization’s own instructions or a named public-service referral. Confirm acceptance and the total cost before booking or driving over.
Donation = reuse by another household. Recycling = a stated mattress-recovery route. Disposal = a waste route without a recycling promise. Collection = a service whose treatment depends on the route or facility. Local lookup = a starting point, not confirmed mattress acceptance.

Before you lift it
A little preparation saves a wasted trip
- Describe the whole load. Give the size, mattress type, approximate age and condition. Mention box springs, split bases and toppers separately.
- Get acceptance first. Send clear photos of both sides if requested. Ask whether the final decision is made by the driver or at the receiving site.
- Agree on access and price. Confirm stairs, elevators, parking, carrying help, pickup boundaries, taxes and any per-piece charges.
- Follow that service’s wrapping rules. A charity, recycler and municipal collection crew may have different instructions. Use the bag or protection they require.
- Use the assigned time and place. Keep donation items dry, secure the load for travel and leave enough time to unload before the facility closes.
If the first organization says no
A refusal can be about mattress condition, size or simply a full warehouse. Ask a second verified local program if the mattress is still suitable for someone to sleep on. If it is worn out, move on to recycling or approved disposal.
The Canadian Furniture Bank directory can help identify nearby organizations. It is a directory of furniture services, so check each organization’s mattress policy. 211 Canada can also help locate community services where coverage is available.
Do not leave a rejected mattress at a charity, recycling bin, roadside or apartment waste area without permission. For a private removal company, ask which receiving facility it uses before accepting a recycling claim.
Questions, answered
Mattress donation & recycling FAQs
Where can I donate a used mattress in Canada?
Start with an organization that explicitly accepts mattresses, such as the local donation programs listed in this guide. Send the size, age and clear photos before arranging transport. Acceptance depends on condition, current demand, storage space and the organization’s service area. A general furniture-donation service may still refuse mattresses.
Can I donate a stained or sagging mattress?
A mattress with stains, persistent odours, sagging, tears, mould or pest activity is not a suitable donation. Ask a recycler or your municipal waste service about the correct route. Do not cover up defects or leave the item outside a charity after hours.
Do Salvation Army, Goodwill and Habitat ReStore accept mattresses?
Do not assume that they do. Rules differ between organizations and locations, and a program that distributes beds may obtain them through a retailer rather than accept them from the public. Check the specific branch’s published accepted-items list and get approval before transporting a mattress.
Is mattress recycling free in Canada?
There is no single Canada-wide price. A municipal program may include collection or eligible drop-off, while a private recycler or landfill may charge per piece, by weight, or for pickup. Confirm the mattress, box-spring, transport and tax charges together. Free furniture donation does not necessarily include free pickup.
Does a mattress collected with bulky garbage get recycled?
Not necessarily. A city may send mattresses to a recycler, dispose of them, or use different routes at different facilities. Montréal, for example, distinguishes Saint-Laurent’s mattress recycling from its other ecocentres. Check the named service’s published instructions if recycling is your priority.
Can I recycle a foam or latex mattress?
Some mattress recyclers accept foam mattresses as well as spring mattresses, but acceptance is facility-specific. Tell the service whether the item is all-foam, latex, spring, a futon or a topper. Do not put a mattress into household packaging-recycling bins.
What should I do with a mattress that has bed bugs?
Do not donate or give it away. Tell your municipality or receiving facility about the infestation before moving it, then follow its wrapping, sealing and labelling instructions. Some facilities accept contaminated mattresses under specific conditions; others refuse them. Do not assume a recycler will accept it.
Can a box spring go with the mattress?
Often, but the two items may count separately for fees or collection limits. A split box spring can also count as multiple pieces. Include every piece when requesting approval or booking pickup.
Can someone collect the mattress from inside my home?
Some charities and private services offer in-home pickup; municipal bulky collection is usually a set-out service. Ask whether stairs, elevators, apartment access, carrying labour and mattress bags are included. Get the total price and access requirements before confirming the booking.
What if my city is not listed?
Check the province or territory section for a regional lookup, then contact your municipality, regional waste authority or hamlet office. Ask specifically about mattresses, rather than general recycling. The directory covers local and regional routes across Canada but does not claim to list every provider or guarantee acceptance.
Do retailers remove an old mattress when delivering a new one?
Some retailers offer a separately arranged removal service, but it is not automatic and conditions vary. Confirm the service before ordering. This guide does not include or book old-mattress removal with an UltraFlex delivery.
How can a charity or municipality suggest a correction?
Use the UltraFlex contact page and include the service name, community and a link to the organization’s official mattress-acceptance or disposal instructions. Please identify whether the service is donation, recycling or disposal so the listing can be reviewed accurately.
About this guide
UltraFlex® brings together published municipal instructions, charity acceptance lists and recycler information to make the next step easier. Listings distinguish confirmed service categories from places to ask for local guidance. Fees, capacity and collection arrangements can change.
Coverage spans all provinces and territories, but no static directory can include every local provider. A listing is not a partnership with UltraFlex or a guarantee that an item will be accepted. Book directly with the service. Suggest a correction or a local service with a link to its official instructions.
