Should I Get An Innerspring Mattress Or A Foam Mattress?

Split view comparing foam mattress layers with an innerspring coil unit
In brief: Foam mattresses use layered foams for contour and support; innerspring mattresses use a coil system with upholstery above it. Foam often emphasizes contour and motion absorption, while springs often emphasize buoyancy and airflow - but design details can reverse those tendencies.

The construction difference

An all-foam bed builds comfort and support from layers with different densities and responses. An innerspring bed uses coils as its primary support system, topped by fibre and/or foam upholstery. A hybrid sits between these categories with a more substantial comfort system over coils.

For the wider taxonomy, see Understanding the Different Types of Mattresses.

Side-by-side tendencies

Decision factor All-foam tendency Innerspring tendency
Contour Often closer conforming Often shallower, depending on upholstery
Movement Often absorbs more Often feels more responsive
Airflow Depends on foam and cover Air can move through coil cavity
Edge Depends on core/perimeter design Depends on perimeter coil or foam
Weight Can be substantial Varies by coil gauge and construction
Noise No coils Coils and frame should be assessed

Do not shop by stereotype

High-resilience foam can feel lively, and a spring mattress with thick memory foam can feel deeply contouring. Pocket coils can reduce movement transfer relative to connected coils. Specification quality matters more than the category headline.

Choose foam to investigate when

Browse UltraFlex® foam mattresses and compare layer information, finished height and stated feel.

  • Pressure contour is a high priority.
  • You are sensitive to a partner’s movement.
  • You prefer a quieter, less springy response.
  • The delivery route favours a compressible format.

Choose innerspring to investigate when

Browse UltraFlex® spring mattresses, then test the actual upholstery and coil system.

  • You like buoyancy and easier repositioning.
  • Air movement through the support core matters to you.
  • You prefer a more traditional surface response.
  • You are comparing reinforced edge designs.

A fair comparison test

  1. Choose models near the same price and intended firmness.
  2. Use your normal sleep position and pillow.
  3. Check pressure and alignment after settling.
  4. Roll, sit at the edge and simulate partner movement.
  5. Verify base, delivery and finished-height requirements.

Compare two finalists without category bias

Choose one foam model and one innerspring model at a similar price and intended firmness. Test both in the same sleep positions and use the same pillow. Record pressure, ease of turning, edge stability, partner movement and finished height. The winner should be the better complete mattress for the sleepers, not the category with the more familiar story.

  • Comparable price and firmness
  • Same testing time and positions
  • Pressure and alignment notes
  • Movement and edge notes
  • Base and delivery requirements
